The history of the center currently can be broken into activities prior to the establishment of the center, establishment of the center and Phase I & II by Year.

First Pre-Planning Workshops

Each university held an initial workshop (Drexel University on November 18, 2010 and UL Lafayette on November 19, 2010) to introduce the CVDI vision and I/UCRC concept to prospective members, as well as present some research capabilities/ideas.

Second Pre-Planning Workshops

Each university held a second workshop (Drexel University on March 2, 2011 and UL Lafayette on March 4. 2011) to reintroduce the CVDI vision and I/UCRC concept to prospective members and to obtain a better understanding of the needs and interests of prospective members.

Formal Planning Grant Workshop

UL Lafayette and Drexel University held a joint meeting in Philadelphia on May 3-4, 2011. The primary purpose of the planning workshop was to bring the potential industrial/government partners and selected university research teams together to create a forum for exchange of ideas and to ensure the alignment of university project ideas with the interests of future industry members. Representatives of the National Science Foundation were also in attendance.

Proposal Preparation and Submission

One of the primary outcomes of the Formal Planning Grant Workshop was the decision to proceed with the efforts to create the center. From May to September 2011, staff from both universities wrote the proposal, incorporating feedback from the prospective partners as well as members of the I/UCRC community. The proposal was submitted on September 26, 2011.

Award

On February 4, 2012, a formal award letter was issued by the National Science Foundation (NSF) to Drexel University and the University of Louisiana at Lafayette; this letter, in effect, approved the creation of the Center for Visual and Decision Informatics (CVDI).

Innovation Priorities: What Matters Next in Big Data?

On March 7, 2012, Drexel University held a workshop focusing on Big Data problems. The primary goal was to obtain a better understanding of what are significant problems and issues from the perspective of potential industrial partners.

CajunCodeFest 2012

This event was a two-day coding competition focusing on transforming “data” into health care solutions, specifically addressing childhood obesity.

The University of Louisiana at Lafayette hosted the 5th annual CajunCodeFest competition focusing on Smart Community apps and tools on March 29- April 1, 2017.

Industry Advisory Board Meeting – Spring 2017

The University of Virginia hosted the spring industry advisory board meeting in Charlottesville, VA on April 24 – 26, 2017.

NSF-TEKES CVDI Helsinki Leadership Seminar – May 2017

The seminar was held Monday, May 22, 2017. The purpose of the seminar is to foster the transatlantic collaboration between Finland and USA and gather relevant stake holders around a common vision and a long-term commitment to sustain the win-win collaboration between academia and industry in both countries.
